An Introduction To Grouse Shooting
Season: 12th August – 10th December
The Red Grouse can be found throughout Scotland and most North English moorland and are unique to Britain due to their heather habitation.
Grouse are seen as one of the most challenging birds to shoot, with their extremely nimble flying technique and ability to fly at speeds that far excel any other game bird. Guns must always be on high alert as that bird which is heading in your direction can turn on a sixpence and disappear out of sight before you have even raised your gun…
At the start of the season, grouse are found in small coveys of around 8 birds and as the season progresses, these birds “pack-up” and form groups which can be in excess of 200.
Driven grouse shooting consists of a team of 8 or 9 guns, consisting of a whole team of friends or a Roving Syndicate of various guns put together by ourselves. Each member of the team chooses a number from the peg draw and is allocated a “Butt”, these can be sunken into the ground or positioned behind a stone wall providing camouflage against the landscape.
